This article applies to Windows Vista and above. Data Execution Prevention is enabled for Windows programs and services only by default, which means that you do not have to change anything, unless you enabled DEP for all programs.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1\
  2. Right click on age2_x1.exe, click Properties and switch to Compatibility Tab.
  3. Click Change settings for all users
  4. Check Run this program in compatibility mode and choose Windows 98 / Windows Me from list.
  5. Confirm with Apply and OK.
  6. Repeat this step for the following exe files below:

  1. Open Advanced system settings and open Settings below Performance.
  2. Navigate to the Data Execution Provention Tab and click on Turn on DEP for all programs and services, except those I select
  3. Add the following exe files to the list, by clicking Add... and navigating to the file location.
  4. Repeat this step for the following exe files below:

Confirm with Apply and OK and reboot your computer. You are done!
