The main purpose of the spearman line is as a counter to cavalry units (such as scouts, knights, camels). Spears can give trouble to skirmishers in low numbers although skirmishers are generally a counter to the spears. Archers absolutely decimate spears. Both archers and skirmishers get an attack bonus of 3 vs. spears, while cavalry archers get a bonus of 2. Swordsmen also kill spears very easily. In feudal age, spears and skirmishers form a nice combination.
